, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30. we start the day with jennifer hill in for rob. jennifer, i got a look at your weather maps. i saw the word "cold." it was there somewhere. >> i can't believe you were peeking before everything starts! this morning, unfortunately, it's not cold or cool in livermore or concord. we're still seeing temperatures in the upper 60s, 70 in oakland but we have seen some cooling along the coastline. today things are really going to start to pick up in terms of that onshore breeze to start to cool us down. once that comes onshore we'll notice those temperatures getting much cooler. probably colder as we get towards the end of the week. noon temperature 74 fremont, 84 livermore and 64 in san francisco. >>> let's turn to mike starting off on the nimitz. >> surprise. something going on on the nimitz overnight. we had an accident right around high street. chp has just been notified they need to assist caltrans in picking some of the cones up northbound at 23rd heading through downtown but that means the construction zone there is clearing up. we'll take a look a

in the east bay. >>> good morning. it's 4:30. let's start with a look at the wake up weather and jennifer hill. good morning. >> good morning. cool out there this morning. scott had his nice cardigan when he walked in. 55 degrees in fairfield. 56 in san jose and 56 in concord. by noon things are warming up. it has been cool and things are going to die down. high pressure is building and we will talk about a steamy weekend forecast. we can put the cardigan away. >> let's talk to mike and talk traffic. >> i didn't know you wore a cardigan in. we will see how things are moving on 880 northbound. we are looking at what's coming towards us from hayward and you will see construction marked there. no slowing through the scene from davis up to 90. you might find a lane blocked, but from the same angle, the headlights are moving and we don't see anything visible from the coliseum, but not as far south as the marina. northward as far as that maze. east shore freeway, no delays. no overnight wind advisory for the bridge itself, but we have surface street issues that might affect highway 24. more importan

cannon and jennifer hill is taking a look at one the hottest days of the summer, but it's fall. >> hopefully the last really hot day of fall. we have seen cooler morning temperatures. this is a look at the 8:00 a.m. forecast. 62 degrees in oakland and 59 degrees in san rafael. take a look at my 12:00 more cast. 84 in san rafael and in fairfield and nor n livermore. very hot expected today, but i will tell you about the cool down. i know you have been watching the bay bridge. >> i want to remind you to check the calendar. we are looking at this right in the middle of this shot for about seven minutes and as we get ready, they cleared it. no delays here. san mateo bridge and no delays here either. off of 880 and the watch will be crowded in about 20 minutes and the volume will increase. back to you. >> new this morning, a bay area city is talking about doing away with toys in kids meals. the san francisco land use and economic committee will consider an ordinance today that would set nutritional standards for meals that come with toys. if the meal has too many calories or salt or

's check your forecast. for that we turn to meteorologist jennifer hill who's in for rob this morning. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning. it's a little cool outside. we had that breeze really picking up yesterday but a big warmup is on the way. a bit of low clouds around this morning, maybe a little fog but we'll see that burning off. temperatures in the 50s as we look at 8:00 a.m. as we head toward noon we'll all be enjoying quite a bit of sunshine and warm us up to 70 in concord, 71 in livermore, 67 in san jose, 62 at noon. so is the first day of fall that comes this evening at 8:00, it's going to feel more like summer as we head toward the end of the week. 69 degrees at 4:00 in fremont, 73 in livermore and we're looking at 68 degrees. so with the seven-day forecast here, a little cool today. we're forecasting temperatures right in the mid-70s as we look at the east bay. by the time we hit the weekend, forecast highs making it back into the 90s for the first weekend of fall. it kind of seems counter intuitive, doesn't it, scott. >> it does. great way to start fall. >>> mike joining

'll double and almost triple that by the end of the commute. >> jennifer said it was hot. you say it's a spare the air day. what presicily does that mean? christie smith is at a castro valley bart station with more. >> reporter: good morning. when you see people heading to the bart station at 4:15 in the morning and they have a t-shirt and no coat, you know it will be a hot one. the air quality is not really good. people are urged to take public transportation. public transportation is not free today like it was previously. still you are being urged to take it or koor pool or walk. anything but driving around alone. this is the third spare the air day in a row. the eighth this year. the heat had people doing their best to avoid it like eating ice cream, getting into the shade or staying inside with the air conditioning after we complain about a long and cool summer. speaking of air conditioning, pg&e was recommending conservation after the heat knocked out power to more than 30,000 customers saturday due to a system overload that went on for nearly three hours as temperatures soared

cannon. straight up 5:00. just turned 5:01. we want to check in with jennifer hill who is in for rob this morning. >> it's breezy outside and cool outside for the first day of fall. we're forecasting temperatures only in the 50s at the 8:00 a.m. hour. not seeing a lot of clouds around. if you're heading out for lunch it will warm up to the 70s and 80s. 71 in fairfield, only 62 in san francisco. coming up, a warm weekend is in the forecast. >> all right, jen, we'll look for that. also those breezy conditions could mean you could get caught in a gust crossing over the water. we're watching 101 heading out of san jose into morgan hill at bailey avenue. report of an accident maybe still in lanes. no major slowing. most folks heading north into san jose starting about now. the roadways are moving nicely. there are your speeds. we have that construction zone marked on 101 with that repaving project that's going on but it sounds like most of the major construction is coming to an end so all of those spots should be picked up. you may still have a closure, the off-ramp over at oakland road.

a second language. jennifer mistrot shows us a new program in fremont that's getting kindergarteners speaking mandarin. [ mandarin ] >>> reporter: this is the second day of miss wang's kindergarten class. the kids are jazzed. they are learning the world's most spoken language. it's the first year of the fremont school district's mandarin immersion program. >> in a nutshell, they are going to learn the culture. they are going to learn the language. and they are going to be educated in all the same standards. >> reporter: same course work any other california kindergartener gets except they will spend 90% of their classroom time counting, singing and speaking chinese. these mini language wizards are chosen by lottery and come from classes throughout the district. the goal is to create bilingual citizens. >> we're mexican and italian and just very mixed american family so as far as her knowing mandarin or knowing chinese culture i thought that was something else just to expose her two. >> reporter: most of the kids have at least one chinese parent but english is still the first language

images of jennifer hawk pettitte alive. this newly-released video ticks off the final moments of a horrific crime. pettitte withdraws $15,000, nervously explaining that she and her family being held hostage and the money is a ransom. the manager called 911. >> we have a lady in the bank right now who says that her husband and children are being held at their house. she is petrie if ied. all right pettitte got the money and left the bank at 9:22. >> they told us they wouldn't hurt anybody if she got back there with the money. she believes them. >> reporter: at 9:26, police in unmarked cars to the pettitte house. officers are told to block off the street. almost 30 minutes later, 9:54, a badly injured william pettitte escapes to a neighbor's house and a second 911 call is made. >> i got bill pettitte here who's hurt, my neighbor. >> he's at your house? >> yes. he is right here. >> reporter: the suspects allegedly set the house on fire and attempt to flee in the pettitte's car. police tried to block the driveway causing the two vehicles to collide. the officers approached the car
